Veg is really good value, especially now supermarkets such as Asda and Morrison’s do their ‘wonky’ veg really cheaply.

Plus as long as you’ve bought it as fresh as you can, it will keep for ages.

For instance, as the weather gets cooler, I buy potatoes by the 25 kg bag from my local greengrocer. At £7 for a 25 kg bag, it works out much cheaper than buying the smaller bags from the supermarket, and they last for several weeks. As the weather gets warmer, we change over to new potatoes as the old variety don’t do as well in the summer.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with frozen veg either, though personally I don’t think it’s usually as nice as fresh. I do have exceptions though, for instance we like petit pois peas, so I make sure I keep a bag in the freezer and I’m not averse to using frozen chopped onions, peppers etc.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll mention it again. I’m a big believer in a ‘rainbow’ plate. Lots of different coloured vegetables not only look really delicious, they’re really good for you.

As a family we’ve always insisted the kids have veg on their plate. It was something hubby and I started with my daughter and we all continued with the grand kids. As a result, my daughter and the kids love a huge variety of fresh veg. They’re never forced to eat whatever is on their plate, but they will usually at least give it a try.
